Absheron peninsula, with its many historical buildings and natural phenomena, will help our guests to touch the ancient civilization that inhabited this oldest land from immemorial times.
For over 1000 years, starting from the Achaemenid Empire (VI century. BC.) And up to the fall of the Sassanid Empire (VI century.) people inhabiting the territory of modern Azerbaijan, worshiped the elements of fire. Despite the subsequent Islamization, the Azerbaijani people have preserved their culture in both spiritual and material heritage of Zoroastrianism.
One of the temples of fire - Ateshgah ("House of Fire») (XVII century.) - Is situated in Surakhani village (25 km from Baku). It is built on the site of the "eternal" inextinguishable fires, the so-called "seven holes temples" - the natural burning gas outputs. During the eighteenth century around the sanctuary joined up to each other chapel, monastic cells, a small caravanserai, a central rotunda and other buildings. In addition to the Temple of fire worshipers in Azerbaijan there are numerous of other structures associated with the worship of the human to fire.
Temple of fire worshipers "Ateshgah", for centuries has been a place of pilgrimage for followers of Zorooastra and now is an open-air museum, retaining its original appearance and layout. Numerous cells will help you to know the temple closely and explain why it represents one of the most popular monasteries of fire-worship to which pilgrims came from India and other countries.
But Absheron is famous not only for its historical and religious values. There are enough natural values too – it’s the gas and oil, which began to be extracted here since the 18th century.
